Description No 1
Age Group: 6 years and over
In the book “Description No 1”, these cards contain 50 descriptive words each of which is accompanied by six semantically-related terms. Children are asked to use these words to make a complete description. The activity is very important, as many children are known to have difficulty using the linguistic code appropriately. As a result, their descriptions are simple and lack organization and coherence. These difficulties stem from poor use of cognitive and linguistic strategies.
The term of description denotes the choice of appropriate words and phrases to fulfill a special communication purpose and present the traits of the object of description precisely and clearly.
Descriptive language must be precise and clear. It requires the use of adjectives qualifying the described word. Descriptive texts are often written in the present tense and contain progressive verb forms expressing the duration and the permanent state of the described object. Adverbs are also very common when writing descriptive sentences.
Description is usually part of a time-structured narration.
