Description

Reading Comprehension - PART 1

Age Group : 6 years and over

The book “Development of Reading Comprehension in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder – Part 1” is valuable for both specialists and parents who want to help children develop reading comprehension skills in a systematic, enjoyable and effective way.

According to scientific research, children acquire decoding and reading comprehension skills at the same time, but each skill develops independently of the other. Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) usually develop decoding skills, but have difficulty with reading comprehension. They can identify words relatively more easily than understanding what they have read. This may be attributed to the fact that comprehension is a more abstract skill than decoding.

It proposes four levels of intervention, selected based on scaling difficulty.

- The first level comprises activities testing the comprehension of the question “Who”. The objective is to find the character mentioned in a text.

- The second level comprises activities testing the comprehension of the question “Where”. The objective is to find a specific location mentioned in a text.

- The third level comprises activities testing the comprehension of the question “What”. The objective is to identify the categories, the objects, the actions and the abstract ideas of a text.

The fourth level comprises activities testing the comprehension of the question “How”. The objective is to identify the feelings and the adjectives that qualify a character or an object mentioned in a text.
