First 100 Words | A Guide to Developing Speech and Language
First 100 Words
The e-book First 100 Words | A Guide to Developing Speech and Language is a structured approach to developing language skills. It comprises a total of 100 words that young children can understand and use.
The words are classified into 14 categories. The objective of the recommended activities is to help children to:
- become familiar with speech sounds
- store these sounds in their memory system
- distinguish phonetic sounds
- produce speech sounds
The second part of the e-book comprises a set of activities for phrase-level language development.
Steps for developing Language Skills
- listening
- imitation
- automatization (with prompts)
- spontaneous speech production (without prompts)
At this stage (age), you don’t assess children’s articulation skills (i.e. their ability to produce sounds correctly). Children must simply be able to handle words consistently and prove that they can understand their meaning.
